Project Overview
DDG's Kapuk naga Indah was a large scale master planning project of 25,194 acres off of the coastline of Jakarta, Indonesia. The design process began by researching the world's great waterfront cities - Venice, Amsterdam, New York, Baltimore, and conceptualized Kapuk Naga Indah as several "island cities" along the coast. Each of Kapuk Naga Indah's islands draw inspiration from a great world metropolis. Island 2B "riverwalk' is inspired by the famous San Antonio's Riverwalk in Texas. The intimate scale of Riverwalk and the sense of place encourages collective experiences and human interaction. The neighborhoods of the island districts feature architectural styles appropriate to theme, from contemporary to old world.
MasterPlanning
When masterplanning these islands, we did research on famous cities taking account their circulation, green space, residential areas, and commercial areas. In particular, Island 2B was modeled after San Antonio's Riverwalk. At the tip of the island is a large outdoor commercial district which frames the river. The commercial district was divided into different architectural styles ranging from Contemporary, Main Street USA (art deco style), Tropical, Santa Barbara, and European. The retail facades were designed done by hand sketching and AutoCad, then later modeled in 3D using Google SketchUp.
Residential Design
DDG was also commissioned to design the residential neighborhood on the Islands. We designed 5 different sized residential homes from the home's floor plans to the residential facade. I specifically designed the "Pine / Iris house" and worked on the autocad floor plans and 3D modeling for the rest of the homes.
I did precedent research on "rustic" yet contemporary houses. Since Indonesia has a lot of rainfall, the roofs needed to have steeper pitch. The client also wanted the luxury of a lot of natural light without the intensity of the the sun. These were some of the factors that help drive the design of the facade.
